This standard can be described as an information technology process assessment. SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination) can be expressed as the determination of software process improvement and capability levels. It is a standard developed jointly by ISO and IEC.
Reference Model. ISO/IEC 15504 is divided into two dimensions: the process dimension and the capability dimension.
Processes. Five process categories are defined:
- Customer and supplier
- Engineering
- Support
- Management
- Organisation
Capability Levels and Process Attributes. A capability level is assigned to each process: Level 5 Optimising process, Level 4 Predictable process, Level 3 Established process, Level 2 Managed process, Level 1 Performed process, Level 0 Incomplete process.
Process attributes are defined using the following characteristics:

- 1 Performance Management
- 2 Work Product Management
- 1 Process Definition
- 2 Process Deployment
- 1 Process Measurement
- 2 Process Control
- 1 Process Innovation
- 2 Process Optimisation.
