Testing and certification: AC-output inverters or converters, whether grid-tied or standalone, must meet safety and grid-connection requirements in line with local and international specifications and standards.

The DC output from a photovoltaic panel, a wind turbine, or other source needs to be converted into nominal grid AC power, such as 120 Vac 60 Hz single-phase or 480 Vac 60 Hz three-phase. The inverter or converter does the important work in this power system.
