European Union (EU) Organic Certification
The European Union (EU) Organic Regulation governs organic farming and food production. This regulation forms the legal basis for organic production within the EU and defines the certification process.
To obtain EU organic certification, producers must meet these conditions:
- Compliance with organic production rules: Production must follow established organic farming rules. This prohibits using synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms.
- Subjection to the audit process: Producers undergo regular independent audits. These audits inspect farmland, production processes, and records.
- Organic product traceability: Producers must document each stage of organic production to ensure traceability. Organic products must be traceable throughout the supply chain.
- Application to authorized certification bodies: Producers must apply to authorized certification bodies. These bodies audit the production process and manage the certification.
The EU Organic Regulationrequires certified organic products to carry the EU organic logo. This logo tells consumers the products meet EU organic standards for production and certification. It is used in the marketing and trade of organic products.
The EU organic certification process and resulting certificates ensure organic farming is recognized within the EU and by its trading partners. They also guarantee the safety of organic agricultural products. For non-EU countries, specific export requirements may also apply under this certification.
